SMI Global Boundless CFC 2.0 Vaporizer Review

SMI Global Boundless CFC 2.0 Vaporizer Review

As the market for vaporizers continues to grow, we're seeing a number of established brands updating the design and performance values of their devices. The intent is generally to make them slicker, faster, and easier to use. Such is the case with the device we'll be exploring today. the CFC 2.0 Boundless by SMI Global.

SMI Global Boundless CFC 2.0 Vaporizer Review

The Boundless is a beginner-friendly portable conduction vaporizer that’s made specifically for high quality dry leaf. Its' design is similar to a host of similar devices on the market such as the Pax 3 and the Davinci IQ Vaporizer, essentially it's a handheld battery-powered vaporizer that's convenient to carry in a pocket or purse.

Design

The Boundless is pretty slick for a flower vaporizer, though it's a bit bulkier than the original CFC. With a body and mouthpieces made primarily from plastic, it's lightweight and durable while also keeping the cost down as compared to metal-sleeved devices.

The device sports an ergonomically designed outer shell that fits nicely in the palm for people with a wide variety of hand hand sizes. There's a single 18650 lithium ion battery housed in the casing that delivers power, it unfortunately can't be removed or replaced.

We mentioned that the CFC 2.0 is lightweight, and per manufacturer spec it clocks in at just over two ounces, which is remarkable, particularly for a device of this size.

The ceramic chamber is oval-shaped and deep. While Boundless says it'll hold up to 0.5 grams of dry leaf, even with finely-ground flower lightly packed we suspect the actual capacity comes up a bit short of hitting that number. For solo sessions, which most portable vapes tend to cater to, this should be fine. Expect to pack at least a few bowls, however, if you're going to be passing this one around.

Included in the CFC 2.0 kit are a couple of bowl and mouthpiece screens, a charging cable and user's manual, and a water pipe adapter that replaces the removable mouthpiece.

Performance

Using the CFC 2.0 is pretty much a breeze, as the device doesn't sport many of the advanced features that can make more expensive vaporizers confusing. Five clicks of the power button turns the device on or off, and two smaller adjustment buttons allow you to set a vaping range between 140𝇈F and 440𝇈F in one-degree intervals.

Ramp-up time is pretty quick, expect the device to hit its peak temperature in just 30 seconds or so. Wait a few seconds more, however, to allow that heat in the oven to begin transferring to your ingredient of choice.

Vape sessions are pre-programmed to last for five minutes, after which the device will go into standby mode. Five clicks will wake it up and get it generating heat for another five minutes, while holding the power button for two seconds will put it to sleep early. Boundless says to expect about a dozen of these sessions per charge, after which you'll be tethered to a micro-USB port for 2-3 hours juicing up the device.

As far as performance goes, the CFC 2.0 is in line with other vaporizers in the portable category. The small oven with just three airflow holes at the base makes for a slightly restricted draw, but it wasn't so tight as to cause a problem for us. The quick heating time is nice, and from there it's really up to you to dial in the right temperature to get the maximum flavor, vapor production, and effect from your flower.

Drawbacks

We've talked about the plastic construction being a bonus because of how it cuts down on weight while still offering durability. It's still not the most durable material, however, and having so much of it incorporated into the design conveys a bit of a "cheap" feel.

The shape also leaves a bit to be desired - while it looks cool and is comfortable to handle, the lack of a flat bottom to allow the CFC 2.0 to stand up under its own power can make it a bit of a pain to load.

Takeaway

For a vaporizer that’s affordable, easy-to-use, and good for on-the-go purposes, the CFC 2.0 Boundless is a great choice. The no-frills approach to vaping makes for a device that's both beginner-friendly and affordable. Its' portability is hard to beat, which is the key reason you'd want a pocket vape in the first place.

Advanced users may like some of the bells and whistles more expensive models can offer, such as a vibratiory or audible alert when temperature is reached, or programmable session times. But if you're looking for a budget first device or backup, the CFC 2.0 is hard to beat.
