What is a Gravity Bong?

What is a Gravity Bong?

Okay, so we've already discussed the basics of what makes a bong, well, a bong. But, have you heard of a gravity bong?

What is a Gravity Bong?

First off, it’s definitely not a bong that floats (we can dream, fellow McFlys) but it’s still sciencey and awesome to witness.

So, what exactly is it?

A gravity bong is a very different tobacco consumption method. Basically, two empty containers and a bit of gravity science are used to funnel smoke through water and push it into your lungs. Sounds neat, right?

Is it a more potent way of smoking? The answer is yes. Gravity bongs force heavily concentrated smoke into your lungs, filling them to capacity beyond the average hit from a vape pen or water pipe. In short, you’re inhaling an entire bowl of your favorite flower in one hit.

So, how does it work? It’s actually simple: fill the larger of two containers with water (the big vase-looking thing in our picture), then place a smaller container inside the water-filled one (that's the one that looks like a bottomless wine bottle). This second container will have your bowl at the top - light your leaf and lift the second container out of the water - the pull of gravity will create suction inside the chamber as air is pulled in and the water settles back into the first container.

By the time you've nearly pulled the second container out of the water in the first, it'll be filled with smoke. Pull the bowl, put your mouth to the opening, and push the container back down into the water, which will then push the smoke straight into your lungs with one quick, deep inhale.

While we're starting to see some commercially available, high-quality glass gravity bongs hitting the market (the picture above is our Grav Labs 14" Gravitron, also available in other sizes), these have long been a popular DIY device. Because the hit from a gravity bong can be super intense, you might want to experiment with one before buying in.

Good news: gravity bongs are actually really easy to make, all you'll really need aside from stuff you can find at home is the bowl from one of your other water pipes. Let's look at how...

What You Need:

Make sure to have these on hand when you start creating your own personal gravity bong!

  • Plastic soda bottle
  • Bucket or (or another soda bottle bigger than the first one)
  • Bowl (borrowed from another bong)
  • Box cutter or sharp knife

How To Make A Gravity Bong

Step 1

Use your box cutter to cut the bottom off your smaller bottle. The more of the bottle that remains, the larger the hit you’ll receive. Which is a good thing! Just be mindful to not trim too much of the bottom.

Step 2

Now, cut the top off the larger bottle, if you're using one. Got a bucket instead? Take whatever you've got and fill it with water.

Step 3

Okay, now the technical part comes in. Unscrew the cap to your smaller bottle and use your box cutter or scissors to make a hole in the bottle cap. You're going to want to make it big enough to stick the stem of your bowl through, but not so big that the stem is loose - you want a tight fit here.

Step 4

Submerge the smaller bottle in the filled bottom half of the larger bottle (or bucket, whatever) until just the cap remains above water. Screw your cap/bowl onto the bottle and pack it with your favorite leaf or flower.

Step 5

Light the bowl and slowly lift the smaller bottle upwards, but not quite out of the water and watch it fill with smoke.

Step 9

Once your bottle is filled with smoke, carefully unscrew the cap and put your mouth over the bottle opening. Brace yourself for a powerful puff, and plunge the bottle back down into the water while inhaling.

That’s it! Happing gravity bonging!
